~ "The Unfortunate Few" ~

Brothers,

Dry Diggins became known as Hangtown in 1849 when three men were tried and found not guilty for robbery, murder and attempted murder, however, when they stepped out of the court house they were then subsequently hanged by vigilantes... these three men became known as "the unfortunate few." Hangtown incorporated and became known as Placerville in 1854.
